International business situations can be quite different from each other. In this series of articles, we will focus on what really matters when doing business in Italy.
1st part: Meetings and presentations in Italy
The seemingly innate desire to talk is typical of Italian business meetings. Enthusiastic gestures, facial expressions and emotions are the key components of the lively Italian communication style.
In fact, meetings in Italy can be loud and lively and are more often than not dominated by creativity and the power of ideas.
Meetings are mainly for brainstorming. As a consequence, the simultaneous discussion of several issues is not uncommon and participants show their interest in the subject though their active participation, questions and objections.
Presentations, handouts and other materials are well-received and are often used by presenters to support their speech, that should be as eloquent, emotional and captivating as possible. Managers often present spontaneously, intuitively and react flexibly to interposed questions from their listeners.
